Data protection (backup)

Data backup serves two main purposes: Disaster recovery and Data storage.

Disaster recovery is necessary in case of data loss or corruption. Causes could be among others: a server damage, a malicious attack, a user error, a malfunction of CMSimple_XH or a malfunction of a plugin.

Data storage is necessary when an old version of a website or parts of it are to be restored or reactivated.

Backup via FTP

Nowadays, low bandwidth and lack of disk space are no longer relevant issues. The recommended solution to create a backup copy is therefore the complete download via FTP. You simply download the whole CMSimple_XH directory to your own computer. Especially if you are concerned about data retention, you will want to keep not only the most recent version of the website, but older ones as well. Do it!

Backup copy at logout

CMSimple_XH automatically creates a backup copy of content.htm when logging off from the system. The filename of the backup copy starts with the timestamp of creation in the format YYMMDD_hhmmss. The number of backup copies CMSimple_XH keeps can be set under:

Admin menu → Settings → Configuration → Backup : Numberoffiles :

These backup copies contain only the contents of the content.htm – i.e., all pages with their contents and settings. The CMS itself or parts of it are not backed up in this way.

In case of emergency, various previous contents can be restored, among:

Plugins backup

To back up plugins, their settings or data, details should be described in the respective plugin manual (help file). CMSimple_XH does not take care of this automatically. For this reason alone, a complete backup of the whole system is always the better choice.
